OUR ALMOST PERFECT CHECKLIST<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And then things got serious. When we realised that we couldn’t find a suitable finished house, we decided to build a house. A base. A place to go back to when the sailing season is over and a place for all the stuff packed away in David’s garage.<\/p>

So we started making a checklist. No, not one, three checklists:<\/p>

Where?
With WHOM?
How?<\/p>

Where?<\/p>

What is the best place. We have already described this checklist in this blog, so in a nutshell<\/p>

Min 9 months a year
A town nearby
Quiet neighbourhood
No disturbances like airports, noisy streets, etc.
Sea view (this was our most important criterion)
No extreme slopes and the possibility of planting a garden<\/p>

With whom<\/h2>
  • With someone who has a lot of experience<\/li>
  • With someone who knows the area and has good contacts<\/li>
  • With a general contractor.<\/li>
  • With someone we also find personally pleasant<\/li>
  • And, of course, with someone who has the best property and offers a reasonable price.<\/li><\/ul>

    How<\/h2>
    • One floor<\/li>
    • Room height min. 2.50<\/li>
    • Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors (also inside)<\/li>
    • Latest technology<\/li>
    • Completely solar powered.<\/li>
    • A pool (narrow and long)<\/li>
    • An outdoor kitchen<\/li>
    • and outdoor shower<\/li>
    • All doors sliding doors.<\/li>
    • Simple clear design without disturbances<\/li>
    • Clean lines (orientation of the interior walls)<\/li>
    • 2 bathrooms<\/li>
    • Enough space for our daughter and grandchildren to visit<\/li>
    • Lots of light and a clever room layout.<\/li>
    • A terrace with a hammock<\/li>
    • A place for a mango tree and a garden<\/li>
    • Space for a garden shed.<\/li>
    • Seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living<\/li><\/ul>

      A lot of wishes, but they can all be fulfilled.<\/p>

      And then comes the list that we didn’t realise we had. Whilst we were talking to architects and civil engineers who were friends of ours, questions about insulation and drainage arose.<\/p>

      • What will the exterior rendering be like<\/li>
      • and how will the roof be sealed?<\/li>
      • Where exactly are the drains?<\/li>
      • What material will be used for the insulation?<\/li>
      • Will the interior walls be insulated against the exterior walls to prevent moisture from being drawn in from the outside?<\/li>
      • How is the floor insulated? Why are you not installing underfloor heating?<\/li><\/ul>

        Mark in particular, who is a surveyor, would have drawn up a completely different checklist to us. For him, the most important things are insulation and drains, installation of the electrics and a plan that fits perfectly afterwards.<\/p>
