Across all the world\u2019s oceans, there\u2019s an off-season \u2013 a time when it\u2019s better to keep boat and crew safe on land. In the Caribbean, it\u2019s hurricane season. In the Mediterranean, it\u2019s winter. In the Pacific, it\u2019s cyclone time.<\/p>

Over the past five years, we\u2019ve weathered five of these off-seasons. And to be honest: it became harder each year to settle somewhere temporarily and truly unwind.<\/p>

So we made a decision: we want a home base on land again \u2013 a place that feels like home. That\u2019s why we\u2019re building a house in Spain.<\/p>

When we first set sail, we launched our blog Sailrivercafe.com to share what life on the water really looks like. Over 30,000 readers followed our journey. The most popular stories? The honest, hands-on ones from everyday life \u2013 no sugarcoating, no sailor\u2019s tales.<\/p>

The idea to blog about our house project actually came from a friend. Dan lives in the US and plans to move to Spain. Like many of our American friends, he longs for a more cultivated environment \u2013 in a free country with good weather.<\/p>

Now it\u2019s time for a new chapter \u2013 this time on land. On CasaBinz.com, we\u2019re sharing our experience of building a home in Spain. This isn\u2019t the first house we\u2019ve built. We\u2019ve had very good \u2013 and very bad \u2013 experiences. And we\u2019ve paid our fair share of tuition to the school of life. Our first house was built by probably the worst architect imaginable. The last one was built by arguably the best.<\/p>

With this blog, we want to share what we\u2019ve learned, offer some honest insights, and hopefully help others avoid common mistakes.<\/p>

We\u2019ll write about the decisions we make \u2013 and why we make them. We share our experiences with the people we’re building with. The do\u2019s and don\u2019ts. And of course, what life is like for us here in Spain \u2013 with all its frustrations and joys.<\/p>

It\u2019s a mix of the personal and the practical. A story about the longing that led us to search for a home \u2013 and finally to build one. About the many places we considered along the way. After all, we searched for nine years, almost all over the world.<\/p>

And we\u2019re telling it all from two perspectives: hers and his \u2013 often surprisingly different.<\/p>

The first four photos show our house in Luxembourg \u2013 designed by Sharam Agaajani from the architecture firm Metaform in Luxembourg. A dream.<\/p>

The next three show our first house in Igel, Germany. We will definitely not be talking about that architect.<\/p>

And then there\u2019s the parallelogram, also known as the garden house.
